چکیده

This paper describes how linguistic knowledge has been declaratively formalised using Functional Descriptions (FDs), in the generation module of the SAGE system. SAGE (Sentence Analysis and GEneration) is the Natural Language Frontend of the Dialogue Manager of the Esprit I project Esteam-316. The present implementation has the advantage of being based on two principles, which are the dynamic checking of constraints and the functional unification of knowledge and dynamic objects. In order to provide these functionalities to the former formalism of FD, we have introduce the notions of Syntactic Components and of Current Syntactic Component. The whole sentence is built step by step in a complex tree-like structure. The generation interpreter is able to move upward and downward inside this tree. In addition, our system validates the use of a Lexicon-Grammar (drawn from the LADL studies) for sentence-generation. The target language is English, but all of the knowledge bases have been developed in such a way that the generation process is able to support a change of language. Rhetorical Goals Surface Generator Functional Realizer Functional Description

In recent years, natural language generation research has begun to mature rapidly. It has witnessed both the appearance of sophisticated oo-the-shelf surface realizations systems and the development in the knowledge representation community of knowledge bases in a variety of domains. However, knowledge bases typically employ a logic formalism while the state-of-the-art surface realizer, Fuf, em...

Investigating Discourse Socialisation Progress of an English as a Second Language Learner Using Systematic Functional Linguistic Approach

This study was framed on the theory of Language Socialisation and a Systematic Functional Linguistic (SFL) approach. The aim of the study was to analyse the oral presentation discourse produced by an elemen- tary Iranian English as Second Language (ESL) postgraduate student in an American university four times (September/December, 2015 and March/September, 2016) over one year. The data were col...

Hierarchical Functional Concepts for Knowledge Transfer among Reinforcement Learning Agents

This article introduces the notions of functional space and concept as a way of knowledge representation and abstraction for Reinforcement Learning agents. These definitions are used as a tool of knowledge transfer among agents. The agents are assumed to be heterogeneous; they have different state spaces but share a same dynamic, reward and action space. In other words, the agents are assumed t...

Segment Grammar

Incremental sentence generation imposes special constraints on the representation of the grammar and the design of the formulator (the module which is responsible for constructing the syntactic and morphological structure). In the model of natural speech production presented here, a formalism called Segment Grammar (SG; Kempen, 1987) is used for the representation of linguistic knowledge. One b...

The Phrasal Lexicon in Multilingual Text Generation

We introduce the ML-Peba system, a system which generates textual descriptions of animals in both English and Spanish from an abstract knowledge base. The system relies upon a phrasal lexicon for linguistic realization. The paper discusses the pros and cons of this approach for multilingual generation, suggesting that its use enables a more language-independent knowledge representation than mos...
